News from weekend Nov 13th

Bus Eireann Womens National League

Wexford Youths Women AFC          2          Castlebar Celtic AFC             2

After a very entertaining ninety plus minutes of soccer, Wexford Youths Women picked up a point when coming from behind twice in front of a crowd of almost eight hundred in Ferrycarrig Park. The Mayo girls started the most comfortable and looked more composed as they dominated the opening fifteen minutes and piled the pressure on a home defence who were struggling to cope. Charlotte McCormack had to deal with a succcession of corners before eventually the pressure paid off and Castlebar centre forward Emma Mullin was on hand to shoot to the net in a crowded penalty area. Falling behind was the catalyst the Wexford girls needed as they came more into the game and were unlucky not to level when Linda Douglas floated in a free kick and Edel Kennedy was unlucky not to find the net. Fiona Bennett was causing the Castlebar defence all sorts of problems with her speedy up runs up front and in injury time she capitalised on a poor pass back to round keeper Ashling Concannon and level the sides just before referee Michelle O Neill blew the half time whistle. Wexford started the better in the second half and piled on the pressure but could not break down a resolute defence and after ten minutes, disaster struck when Emma Mullin broke through to lift the ball over Charlotte McCormack and restore Celtics lead. Wexford brought on Rianna Jarrett shortly after and after just five minutes she had the sides level when some great attacking play from Fiona Bennett put her through to slide the ball home from an acute angle. Five minutes later, Kylie Murphy was taken down in the penalty area but Ciara O Briens penalty was well saved by keeper Concannon. Minutes later Fiona Bennett broke through the defence again and her low shot hit the post and wide but Castlebar could have taken all three points when Emma Mullin rounded McCormack in the goal but Nikki Dunphy was on hand to clear the ball to safety. In the end both sides were content with a point in this opening match where both sides showed signs of nervousness but strong levels of committment. Fiona Bennett, Nikki Dunphy and Kylie Murphy all excelled for Wexford while goalscorer Emma Mullin, Jennifer Byrne and keeper Ashling Concannon were all impressive for the Mayo side.

The league would like to thanks everyone who supported, attended and helped in any way at the leagues first ever National League match last Sunday. It was a great day for the league to have our players compete at this level and they did so with pride and passion as they came from behind twice to earn a point. The amount of people involved are too numerous to mention but all played a vital part in ensuring that the day was a success for the league and we would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who turned up to support the team on the day. We hope that this is the beginning of something special within the league and we look forward to everyones support for our next home game on Sunday December 4th against Raheny United
