Viking
Cup Report
Under Fourteen
Used as a
preparation for the Gaynor Cup, Wexford Under Fourteen manager Philip McGrath
was happy with his sides performances in this non-competitive tournament Viking
Cup tournament. A nervous start on day one saw Wexford trail 2-0 to a very
strong Cork side at half time but a much improved second half performance saw
Nadine Fortune strike the post with a shot but Shauna McGovern was on hand to slot
the rebound into the net. Wexford battled hard for an equaliser but found the
Cork keeper difficult to beat and the Rebel county held on for the win. Wexford
then had to go straight into game two with no break and the tiredness showed as
North Tipperary took all their chances to run out 3-0 winners. The second day
saw Wexford play better as a team and despite going behind to a first half goal
to the Metropolitan Schoolgirls League (Dublin), a slick second half
performance saw Aimee Bates Crosbie put Hollie Jenkinson through to equalise
and shortly after, Kiera Payne put Hollie through again and she held her nerve
to shoot past the keeper for a well deserved 2-1 win. The final game saw a
local derby against Waterford with Hollie Jenkinson once again finding the net
to give Wexford the lead although Waterford levelled just before the final
whistle. Hollie Jenkinson was rewarded for her performance by being selected on
the team of the tournament.
Under Fourteen
Development
Our Under Fourteen
development squad played in the Viking Cup for the first time with this team
made up of players who will be in competition for next seasons Gaynor squad. They
got off to a flying start when goals from Zoe Butler, Erin Saunders Foley,
Aoife Rees and Ellie Jenkinson saw them overcome South Tipperary 4-0. The team
played Kilkenny next and although Grainne Allen scored for Wexford, the
opposition were much stronger and ran out 5-1 winners. North Tipperary were up
next and although the game was end to end with plenty of excitement and
entertainment, defences dominated and the game ended 0-0. The final game was a
repeat of the first game against South Tipperary and this ended in a draw with
Zoe Tobin Cosgrave scoring for Wexford. Overall this was a good exercise for the
Wexford Development side and shows that the strength in depth in the league is
very strong

Viking Cup Report
v Limerick Desmond
A 1-1 draw against a strong team in which flowing soccer produced many chances that just wouldn't go in. Sara Siggins on target with the lead goal and had one fabulous shot from a tight angle that Wexford fans thought was in.
The ref didn't agree and with a couple of minutes left, a breakaway and a slipping defender gave the opposition an unlikely equaliser from their only real opportunity in the game.
v Tipperary North
Wholesale changes in the starting line-up but once again, dominant play to produce a cascade of chances. The opposition resorted to balls 'over the top' but our defence dealt these with ease. Laura Butler was on hand to get the winner with a deft finish from close in for a 1-0 win.
Tipperary South
Another permutation of the team started this game and once again showed clear understanding of defensive, midfield and attacking play. Once more, dominant play restricted the opposition to virtually no clear opportunities as we again peppered their goal with chances. Sara Siggins was on target again after good assist play from Shannon McGovern.
Limerick County
The final game saw a little experimentation with positional roles for individuals in the formation but even so, we should probably been out of sight in the first fifteen minutes.
We were unable to find a goal in this one but did try more shots from outside the box and defensively we were tight, especially Fiona Ryan who was particularly determined in the tackle and showed great innovation to get a shot in from distance.
Just after the midway point in the second half, a slip up gave the opposition a free ball 35 metres out and their midfielder hit a beauty of a shot that gave our 'keeper no chance.
We upped the pace to try and get an equaliser but couldn't break through despite another glut of good chances.
An enjoyable and revealing two days in Waterford for the Viking Cup where all the girls had an opportunity to demonstrate their progress. Many thanks to all the girls and their parents.
The teams were rotated wholesale in order to give a flavour of individual and combination play and gave the management and parents an insight into strengths and areas to be worked on.
As a bonus, Niamh Thormley was awarded a trophy as one of the eleven in the Team of the Tournament' by Ireland U17 Manager, Dave Bell.
Thanks to the organisers for providing good facilities, organisation and excellent Referees.
