Bus Eireann Womens National League

Wexford Youth Women         1          Cork Women FC         3

Cork Women arrived in Ferrycarrig Park on Sunday determined to seek revenge for their defeat by the Wexford side before Christmas and they did just that against a lacklustre home side. Wexford got off to the worst possible start when conceded after just three minutes when Claudia Hudner shot to the net in a crowded penalty area after the home defence failed to deal with  a corner. Unfortunately the first half was dominated by a well drilled and organised Cork side who reduced the Wexford side to chasing lost causes and lone striker Keeley Clayden was given little supply to trouble the Cork defence. Maria Delahunty did get a shot on twenty minutes but it was way off target and did not trouble Rachel Mullins in the visitors goal. Playing into a strong breeze was not helping the Wexford girls but Cork were keeping the ball moving fast with Sylvia Gee enjoying too much room in midfield and was picking her passes with comfort. Charlotte McCormack was called on to make two excellent saves from Kate McCarthy and Claudia Hudner before disaster struck in the final minute of the half when Clare Shine struck from twenty yards out to find the top corner of the net. Wexford made two changes at half time with Cherelle Khassel and Edel Kennedy coming on for Sadie Murphy and Keeley Clayden but Cork still looked comfortable in the opening exchanges of the half. However, aided by the breeze, Wexford showed character by pulling themselves into the match and Maria Delahunty and Jessica Gleeson both had good opportunities to pull a goal back. Kylie Murphy also had an opportunity but could not dig the ball out from under her feet to get a shot on target and minutes later, Cork broke away and Irish international Denise O Sullivan headed to the net just out of the reach of McCormack in the Wexford goal. This should have broken the home side but to their credit, they battled forward and probably their best chance came when Khassel beat the Cork keeper to the ball and touched it to Kylie Murphy who put the ball over the crossbar. With four minutes remaining, Wexford did get some reward when Nikki Dunphy headed a Maria Delahunty corner to the back of the net, celebrating with a double somersault. However, it was not enough against a well organised Cork side who controlled the game for the first hour and were always going to be difficult to break down once they got their noses in front. Emma Farmer, Claudia Hudner and Sylvia Gee were impressive for the visitors side while Charlotte McCormack, Trish Cleary and sub Cherelle Khassel worked hard for the home side. The Wexford women will now have to shake off the Christmas and New Year blues and head to Castlebar Celtic next Sunday to take on a very inform home side
