Wexford Womens Soccer 18-09-2011

Wexford and District Womens and Schoolgirls League 18-09-2011

Under Twelve Blitz
Last Saturday in Bunclody, saw the cream of Under Twelve Schoolgirls play off for a place in next weekends Leinster Provincial finals in Coolock. The standard of soccer on display was excellent, and showed the level that the underage game is at within the league as all eight teams in action put in some fantastic performances. Kilmore United were exceptionally impressive as they won all three of their qualifying games without conceding a goal with Cora Miller and Becky Furlong standing out in a very strong overall team performance. Ballindaggin qualified in second place in Group A behind Kilmore and also looked very strong, especially in defence. Forth Celtic were best in Group B finishing just ahead of a well organised Bridge Rovers side while Shelbourne first team had to go to a play off to qualify over a young Gorey Celtic side. Shelbourne second string and Tombrack United both missed out on qualification despite fielding very young sides. The five Wexford sides will now travel to Coolock on Saturday where they will compete with the best from Dublin, Kilkenny, Longford and Drogheda to be one of four teams to qualify for the National finals a week later. We wish all five sides the  best of luck in their quest

League kick Off
Next Sunday sees the Wexford and District Womens League kick off with thirty six teams competing in five divisions in what promises to be a very competitive season. Bunclody are the biggest casulaties at adult level as they withdraw their team after eighteen years in the league. It is disappointing to see a club of the calibre of Bunclody fall by the wayside but all is not doom and gloom for them as they have entered at Under Eighteen level so it should not be too long before they are back in the womens league again. Tramore have been promoted to replace them and join last seasons Division One champions Seaview United and runners up St Cormacs as newcomers to the top flight. With Benfica, Curracloe United and Adamstown all likely to lose players to the newly formed National League side so a very interesting Premier division is in store with all eight teams capable of launching a challenge for the title.
Division One is almost unrecognisable from last season with three teams promoted, one relegated, one demoted and Slaney Rovers moving to the Carlow League, only two teams from last seasons division remain. Enniscorthy Town and Shelbourne meet in the first game of the season and these two are likely to be main contenders with Coolgreaney Celtic also likely to be in the shake up. Due to the entry of four new teams, the need arose for a new division at mid league level and sees the formation of Division One B which sees most of the teams from last seasons Division Two A promoted. The return of New Ross Celtic to womens soccer as well as the formation of teams in Bree, Crossabeg and Camolin will see Divisions Two A and Two B, all with seven teams each. With five divisions and four cup competitions, this promises to be a very busy season and coupled with the arrival of National League soccer at womens level, a record number of players will be on the playing fields on a weekly basis
