Wexford and District Womens and Schoolgirls League 09-06-2013

The Wexford Schoolgirls Under Fourteen squad travelled to University of Limerick last weekend and after a very competitive tournament, the girls did the league proud by reaching the Plate final for the second year in a row.

Managed by Barry Dempsey, they got off to an ideal start when proving too strong for Roscommon East Galway in their opening group game, running out comfortable four nil winners thanks to goals from Siobhan Doolan, Rachel Scannell, Deirdre Byrne and Amy Wilson. The second game against Donegal did not start as well and Wexford were two nil down at half time despite playing well and creating several chances but they showed their strong character in the second half and goals from Rachel Scannell and Amy Wilson saw them earn a valuable point.

A win in their third and final group game against Limerick County would have seen Wexford qualify for the Cup semi final and they got the ideal start when Natashe Byrne Rossiter scored a cracking goal after five minutes. A second half goal from Limerick saw the sides level in what was the match of the tournament and Wexford were unlucky not to snatch all three points when a shot from Byrne Rossiter rebounded off the woodwork

This result saw Wexford finish second in the group and a semi final meeting with Midlands Schoolgirls league in the Gaynor Plate and another goal from Natasha Byrne Rossiter saw the girls in Pink qualify for the final which they had won in a dramatic penalty shoot out last season.

This seasons final was against a very impressive North East Counties who had looked very impressive in their group and were unlucky not to have been competing for the Gaynor Cup itself. In a very tight competitive encounter in which the width of the post decided the winner with Wexford hitting the post in the first half but the ball went wide while NEC hit the post with two minutes remaining but the ball bounced in for the only goal of the game

This result effectively saw Wexford finish sixth of the sixteen teams competing and with a small bit of luck, the team could have finished a lot higher and the fact that Wexford are now competing so well is great credit to the coaches in the league training centre. As well as manager Barry Dempsey, coaches Eugene Byrne, Mick Devereux and Dave O Shea played a big part in the teams success while minders Aine Murphy, Elaine Casey, Laura Heffernan and Rianna Jarrett also played their part

Womens League Five a Side

The Wexford Womens League are holding a Monster Womens Five a Side on Sunday August 25th in Bunclody and entries are now been taken. The tournament is limited to thirty two teams and is already filling up fast so if your team is interested, it would be advisable to express your interest as soon as possible. Entry fee is one hundred euro for a squad of ten and the tournament will be divided into four sections so there will be a level for everyone.
