Under Eighteen League
The big match at this age group saw title holders Killenagh
Wanderers overcome previous years winners Cloughbawn 2-0 and already it is
obvious that these two will be among the main contenders for the title this
season. A goal from Caoimhe Roche and an own goal gave Killenagh all three
points in a closely contested encounter. The other favourites to challenge for
the title are Curracloe and they had little trouble overcoming near neighbours
Bridge Rovers. Goals from Derbhla Doyle (3), Lauren Fitzgerald (2), Siobhan
Doolan (2) and one each from Roisin Doolan, Natasha Byrne and Rianna Cullen saw
them run out 10-0 winners. St Josephs travelled to Tombrack and eventually
broke down the young home side to take all three points in a 3-0 win courtesy
of goals from Diane Kehoe (2) and Pamela Walsh
Leinster Under Twelve Cup First Round
St Itas FC 3 Cloughbawn 3 aet (Cloughbawn won 4-3 on pens)
Cloughbawn made the long journey to Portrane, Co
Dublin to take on local club St Itas in the first round of the Under Twelve
Leinster Cup and after a mighty battle, they emerged as victors on penalties
after a 3-3 draw. Playing nine a side for the first time, the Clonroche side
produced some top class football with Chloe O Neill scoring two and under ten
Mary Kaylan rounded off a great weekend when also finding the net. With the
game going to penalties, the young Cloughbawn side held their nerve to advance
to the second round
Leinster Womens Cup First Round
TEK United 7 Bunclody AFC 0
This was a big step up for the young Bunclody side
but despite going down 7-0 in the end, they improved as the game progressed and
will have gained a lot from the experience. TEK raced into an early lead but as
Bunclody got to grips with the game, they held their more experienced hosts at
bay and put in a much improved second half display. They will now go into the
Shield competition and will be prepared for what the opposition will throw at
them on their next outing
Womens Premier Division
Benfica 0 Seaview United 2
Seaview will be delighted with their start to the
season as they made history by winning their opening game of the season for the
first time in four years. They were good value for their victory as they
overcame the home side with a goal in each half from Brid Kehoe and Seaview
will be a side that will cause many teams problems this season
Womens Division One
Castledockrell United 2 Cloughbawn
AFC 4
The home side fell to their first defeat in the
league in over two years when going down 4-2 to a Cloughbawn side eager to put
last weeks opening day defeat behind them. Evelyn Morris and Ellen Kelly were
on target for Castledockrell but goals from Amy Banville (2), Aoife Devereux
and Emer Mernagh gave the visitors the three points
Womens Division Two A
St Leonards 4 Courtown Hibs 0
The home side look as if they will give this
division a run as they picked up their second win of the season with a 4-0 win
over Courtown Hibs. Two goals from Ciara Ryan and one each from Niamh Foran and
Claire Whelan gave St Leonards the points to put them top of the table at this
early stage.
Womens Division Two B
Moyne Rangers 4 Rosslare Strand 2
Shannon O Brien scored both goals for Strand in this
match but Moyne look very strong and are showing to be early favourites as
their experienced side ran out 4-2 winners. Former Cloughbawn players Siobhan
Grant Moorehead and Nicola Davitt both scored twice to open their league
campaign with a win
Fair Play
In an age of win at all costs with players diving,
looking for opponents to be sent off, etc, St
Leonards Claire Whelan deserves a mention for preventing
the Courtown Hibs goalkeeper from unfairly dismissed in their match on Sunday.
As Claire bore down on Hibs goal, she flicked the ball over the advancing keeper
who stopped the ball outside the area with her hands, in the opinion of referee
Pat Sinnott, and he was left with no option to issue a red card. However Claire
approached the ref and explained the ball had actually hit the keeper in the
face and had not handled it so did not deserve to be dismissed. Common sense
prevailed and the goalie remained on the pitch and great credit must go to
Claire for her sense of fair play, a rare element in the game at any level.
