22-09-2013

Wexford and District Womens and Schoolgirls League 22-09-2013

By Peter Doyle

Womens Premier Division

Cloughbawn    2          Adamstown     3

The home side got off to the ideal start in this game and led two nil at the break courtesy of goals from Shauna Wall and Marcella Cullen. However Adamstown showed the grit and determination that have kept them in the top division over the years and scored three in the second half to take what already could be a very important three points. Edwina Colfer scored one and the prolific Chantelle Martin scored two top drawer free kicks to give the visitors victory.

Benfica            6          Coolgreaney Celtic     0

Coolgreaney made the long trip to Waterford but came away empty handed as Benfica proved too strong on the day. The game was closer than the scoreline suggests but the home side deserved their victory with Beserta Ajeti scoring a hat trick while Steph Hallahan added two with Brianne O Connor also finding the net

Seaview United           0          North End United        1

These two sides played out a top class encounter before North End did enough to snatch the three points. Both sides created chances but Alysha Cullen was the heroine as she scored the only goal of the game

Womens Division One

St Josephs        3          Killenagh Wan             1

Isabelle Naughter gave Killenagh the lead but it too St Josephs only five minutes to get back on level terms when Aine Roche found the net on twenty five minutes. The home side got on top in the second half with Stephanie Gahan and Becky Hayden scoring in a three one win

Courtown Hibs 0          New Ross Town           3

New Ross Town continued their good form into this season as they travelled to Courtown and came away with all three points. Republic of Ireland Under Fifteen schools international player Sinead Ryan was the difference between the sides as she knocked in a hat trick

Kilmore United            5          Corach Ramblers        0

The home side lived up to their tag of divisional favourites as they proved too strong for Corach Ramblers. Two goals from Jasmine Redmond and one each from Katrina Parrock, Diane Doyle and Lisa Goff gave Kilmore the points

Womens Division Two A

Tombrack United        0          Camolin Celtic            1

In a game that never really sparked to life, Camolin travelled to Tombrack and took all three points thanks to a second half goal scored by Triona Graham

Womens Division Two B

Rosslare Strand           3          Moyne Rangers           1

Strand opened their campaign with a win as they overcame relegated Moyne three one. Two goals from Emma Kehoe and one from Sarah Farrell was enough to give the home side an opening day victory

Bree United     1          Crossabeg AFC                        0

This very tight game saw Bree eventually take all three points as Lisa Crean scored the only goal of a very close game

Best of Luck to Wexford Footballers

The Wexford Womens League would like to wish the Wexford GAA Women the best of luck in their All Ireland Final next Sunday. Several of the players on the squad play, or have played, in the league in the past and we wish them the best in their quest for an All Ireland winners medal

New format for Under Ten Schoolgirls League

In the past number of years it has become more and more difficult to place teams in the correct division at Under Ten level so this season, we have decided to regionalise the lower divisions. This will also cut down on travel and at the end of the league, the top two teams in each section will play a knock out competition for Division One title, with other finishing places playing for Division Two A and Two B titles. The Premier division will remain in place for the top six teams in the league based on last season’s finishing positions. This season referees for all Under Ten games will be appointed by the league

FAI Womens Cup Semi Final

Next Sunday will see Wexford Youths Women host Castlebar Celtic in Ferrycarrig Park with a place in the FAI Womens Cup final as a reward for the winners. Castlebar were the first ever visitors when Wexford joined the league in 2011 and since that opening day two all draw, the sides have met a total of six times with Wexford enjoying the best of the battles so far having won four, drew one and lost one. However, despite one comfortable four nil win in Castlebar last Decmber, the remaining games have been very tight encounters and there is very little between the sides and both will be eager to book their place in the cup final. Wexford have enjoyed a mixed start to the season as they strive to field a first choice starting eleven as they struggle to cope with injuries to some key players and suffer the added loss of goalkeeper Mary Rose Kelly in this game as she will be in goal for Wexford in the All Ireland Junior final in Croke Park. This cup semi final should prove to be a thrilling encounter and could go all the way to penalties to decide who will be in the November final, we look forward to your support on the day. This is the first of two home games against Castlebar as they are back again the following weekend for their league match which is provisionally fixed for the Saturday night at 7-45pm

Republic of Ireland Under Nineteens

Three Wexford players are currently lining out with the Republic of Ireland Under Nineteen girls in the qualifying round of the UEFA Championships with the group being hosted by Ireland in Dublin. On Saturday Lauren Dwyer, Ciara Rossiter and Ashling Frawley were all part of the team that beat Kazahkstan seven nil in Dalymount and will have hopefully ensured qualification to the elite phase on Monday evening when they would have played Greece in Tallaght. The group winds up when the girls in green play Denmark on Thursday in Tolka Park and we wish our three players, and indeed the full squad, the best of luck in their quest for qualification to the next stage of the competition

League Table Quiz

The league are hosting a table quiz in the Stanville Lodge Hotel on Friday October 4th and are asking for your support. Table of Four is forty euro with some great prizes and proceedings will kick off at 8-30pm and we look forward to seeing you there

Leinster Under Twelve Blitz

Cloughbawn are Wexfords sole representatives in Saturdays Leinster Under Twelve blitz which is being held in Mullingar with a 12 noon kick off. Wexford were allocated five places but due to the early timing of the competition, no other club took up the option so the Clonroche girls will be flying the flag for the league on the day and we wish them the best of luck and hopefully they will make it through to the All Ireland blitz in a few weeks time
